what's the purpose of purlin?

1.Supporting roof or wall covering materials: Purlins directly support roof panels (such as metal panels, sandwich panels, corrugated panels, etc.) or wall panels, transferring their loads to the main structure (such as steel beams, columns). Prevent the covering material from sagging or deforming due to its own weight or external forces such as wind and snow.

2.Load transmission:
Vertical load: Transfer the self weight, snow load, ash load, etc. of the roof covering material to the main steel beam or truss.
Horizontal load: Resist lateral forces such as wind load and earthquake action, and transmit them to the overall structure through the connection between purlins and the main structure.

3.Enhance the stability of the main structure: As a lateral support for the main steel beam (such as a portal frame), it prevents the main beam from buckling (instability) under stress. By connecting the purlins with the support system, a stable spatial structural system is formed.

4.Divide the span of the covering material: The spacing between the purlins (usually 1-3 meters) determines the span of the roof or wall panels, directly affecting the thickness and strength selection of the covering material, thereby optimizing material usage and cost.
